What is composite bonding?
Composite bonding, also called cosmetic bonding, tooth bonding or edge bonding, improves the shape, size and colour of your teeth by adding a tooth-coloured resin to their surface. Dr Naeem matches the composite to your natural shade, sculpts it by hand, sets it with a curing light and polishes it to a natural shine.
Because composite is added to your teeth rather than replacing them, bonding is one of the most conservative cosmetic treatments available. In most cases little or no natural tooth is removed, so the treatment can be adjusted, repaired or refreshed in the future.
Bonding can be used on a single chipped tooth, on a few teeth to close gaps, or across the smile as composite veneers for a more complete change.
Composite bonding can help with
- Chipped, cracked or worn edges
- Small gaps between teeth
- Short, uneven or misshapen teeth
- Mild marks or discolouration
- Teeth that look slightly out of line
- Edges worn by grinding, after a bite assessment

Your new tooth shapes are planned around your face, often with a preview before treatment.

Composite is applied in thin layers, shaped by hand and set with a curing light.

Our patient was self-conscious about her smile because her teeth were misaligned, and she would avoid smiling in photos. She first had clear aligner treatment to move her teeth into the right position. After two weeks of teeth whitening, Dr Naeem used composite bonding to correct the edges and give her teeth their ideal shape.
From start to finish, her treatment took eight months.
“My new smile hasn’t just changed how I look, it’s transformed how I feel.”

FAQs

Ask a questionBonding usually needs little or no removal of natural tooth, so your teeth are largely left intact. The surface is gently prepared so the composite can attach securely.
With good care, composite bonding typically lasts several years before it needs polishing, repair or replacement. Avoiding hard objects, wearing a night guard if you grind and attending regular reviews all help it last longer.
Most patients find bonding comfortable. As there is usually little or no drilling, an injection is often not needed.
The cost depends on how many teeth are treated. Guide prices are shown above, and you will receive a written, itemised plan at your consultation.
Composite does not respond to whitening gel. If you would like whiter teeth, it is best to whiten first so the composite can be matched to your new shade.
Composite is chosen to match your shade and shaped by hand to suit your face, with the aim of a natural, balanced result rather than an obviously done look.
Both can give excellent results. Bonding is more conservative, quicker and easier to repair, while porcelain veneers resist staining better and usually last longer. Dr Naeem will help you weigh up which suits your teeth and goals.
Brush and clean between your teeth daily, avoid biting hard objects, limit staining food and drink, and attend regular hygiene and polishing appointments.
